Rene Gruau (1909-2004) has always been my favorite fashion illustrator of all time!

Ever since I was eighteen and studying art in Paris, all through my career, and up till now, I cannot stop being amazed at how, with 2 or 3 little brush strokes, the most astonishing lady appears: Sensual, glamourous and ultra sophisticated.

He collaborated with major magazines like Elle, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel, and Madame Figaro, and major designers like Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Rochas, Lanvin, Elizabeth Arden, and Hubert de Givenchy and the great Yves St Laurent. Gruau gave life to their haute couture clothing with his captivating illustrations.

Last month, I had the chance to work on a photoshoot that did not involve fashion as usual, but another passion of mine: Food! There was a budget constraint, so I worked on the art direction as well as the food styling and it was a first for me, so i did a lot of research... and here's the result!

A funny story has been shaking the web lately: Julien Abboud the talented designer for whom I do all the visual communication has created for fun a Haifa Barbie to be able to dress her the way he dreams of, and it looks like this:

Now the dress is absolutely fabulous but the buzz it created on the web and the rumours are hallucinating!! The polemics whether we should buy this doll for our kids, the fact that Mattel created for Haifa, etc etc... Read all about it on Julien's FB page here.

And we don't even know if Haifa herself has actually seen the doll's picts (actually it was posted on her wall by her SM team...) or if Mattel even know about it!

Nantes: Les Machines de l'ile & Royal Deluxe: XXl amazement!

I visited Nantes again for 24 hrs last week, and it still is one of my favorite spots in Brittany.
But this time I discovered Les Machines de l'Ile and was in complete awe!
Take a look at this:

François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice are actively involved in the renewal of street theatre and urban performances in Europe. They have been exploring machinery and objects in movement for fifteen years.
They chose Nantes to be the home of their XXL creations: in Nantes you could wake up one day and not be able to reach work because a Giant lady tall as building has just landed in the middle of the street and is taking a stroll around the city...
The elephant that you see above showered me in water if you want to know!... needless to say my kids rejoiced ;-)
Nantes being first on the list of "les villes ou il fait bon vivre" was a great spot for the Machines to land, but they are now traveling the globe also: Japan, Mexico ... Click here to know more. It feels good to have people like François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice in the world, so cheers to them!

For a few months now, I've been working with the passionate Lebanese Chef Karim Haïdar, to create the image of his company and various restaurants. And now the website developed by NoBrand following our graphic guidelines is finally out right here!
You can have a look at Karim's Bio along with pictures of his creations, and many more...
Soon you will be also able to get a taste of his talent in Beirut at Zabad restaurant!
There's been lots of talk about Zabad, but I do assure you it's worth the wait.
The menu will feature Karim's latest delicacies, interiors have been developed by my friends at Bleu , and branding by myself as already revealed . (Though it seems some people liked it so much they put on their portfolio... ;-) )

After being so long off the blog, I thought I'd give you one exhaustive post, with lots of pics about my wanderings this summer!

Our trip started in Calabria, Cosenza to be precise, with its lovely medieval town.

North Calabria is very refreshing because you do not see many tourists,
you really feel like an explorer.

After that we moved down to Tropea, a little jewel on the Mediterranean:

...where we ate seafood pasta and spada involtini, or rolls of sworfish, miam!

And from Calabria, we were off to the Aeolian islands, starting with Lipari and Panarea,

and then to Stromboli!!! The island with the eponym volcano!

Okay at first it looks quite peaceful from afar...

Then you discover its beaches where the sand is actually lava stone...

And suddenly at sunset, badabooomm!

Stromboli is one of the most active volcanos on the planet but its eruptions are quite small... but scary nevertheless! It is very well seen from miles away, and people actually call it "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean".

After Stromboli we continued to Mount Etna, in Sicily, yes another volcano ;-)

And more lava stone, with cute little red visitors..

In search for more peaceful surroundings, we really enjoyed the Gigliotto Agriturismo and its fruity wine...

Caltagirone village, which actually comes from the arabic قلعة الجرن which means town of the jar, and its ceramic stairs...

Then Ragusa, Modica and Noto the Baroque towns, unforgettable Syracusa, and I'll finish with these lovely pictures from The Tarot Gardens of Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, on our road back to Rome's airport.

To put you in the mood, do not miss Woody's latest delicacy: "Midnight in Paris". Don't know about you but I'm particularly enjoying Mr.Allen's mature films as much as his classics (or even more)! Vicky Cristina Barcelona was sexy, funny and smart and this one is an absolute delight! Just watching Owen Wilson playing "a la woody", and Adrian Brody as Dali (pict below) is pure perfection.

Jay Jay? You know, Jermanos Jermanos, the new character by Fadi Raidy, star of the Cornelli ads?? Well, personally........ I liiiiike it !!! (i mean him;-)

Seriously, not often we come across a well-thought of campaign in Lebanon:

>The billboards (will post a pict of those soon) look fresh and nice, good composition, the photos of JayJay are nicely taken and well-lit. In a jungle of ugly billboards and bad pictures this is definitely refreshing!!!

>The character and the TV ads : What can say about Fady? Well as Jessica Rabbit says: He makes me laugh!.. He depicts so well the Lebanese cliché! All his previous characters were a hit but this one is definitely my favorite. C'mon we all have an "ameurkaynayyyyyy" cousin, don't we?

So to sum it up, this is an ad to which every Lebanese relates, regardless which side of town they live in ;-) The production is well done, and the visual identity is neat too...

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

SbyM: Yasmine, how did you start your career in Jewelry designing? Can you tell us a bit about your achievements?

Y: I actually did not start my career as a jewelry designer, I am an architect. And whenever I had a break between two jobs or two clients, I absentmindedly drew recurring sketches... And those little sketches inspired the fundamental lines of my collection today.

SbyM: A few words about your collection?

Y: My designs are all about interlacing lines, horizontal lines, vertical lines... exactly like architecture: the ever interfering traces of man in the urban landscape... two worlds always mixing, sometimes with passion and some other times with serenity...

A few days ago I went with a wild friend on a wilder shopping spree in Rue St Honoré, where you can find a high concentration of the latest trends in fashion, design and food: Great fun for taste buds and soul!

We started with a soup at Higuma ; full spicy energy refill!
And then we went on to discover the new AESOP boutique, Australian herbal power... The boutique itself is in splendid Aussie wood, and the citrus fruits hydrating balm was just as splendid!

We continued towards uno de 50, silver spanish accessories, also new on St Honoré: If you're looking for a statement piece, that's where you should look!

After that, Colette was just too much.. Too much people, too much attitudes... I think too much hype kills the hype, no?
So we decided to play it low key and try the new fruit dips at Godiva with a lovely iced green tea "desert des tartares" at Café Verlet... Mmmm!

This frozen vegetable packaging was a project we worked on a few years ago, and the brief was "vintage, homemade, in a 1950's kitchen by aunt lily..."
Clearly the communication agency (?) did not get the same brief, or maybe perceived the brand as "fashionable and trendy cooking" because of our design??
Or maybe two or three years ago vintage was an emerging trend and now it is highly fashionable...
In any case, it is the first time someone else works on the communication of something we created from scratch and I actually like it! Does it look edible though?

I didn't know much about this fauve artist but being a fan of the movement i rushed to Montreal's Fine Arts Museum only to discover a palette of colors just the way i like them... Till April 19!

MAJAL produced a “Sustainable Construction Checklist”, presented in the form of a handy, user friendly and visually attractive tool (designed by us!). This checklist was distributed to architecture students around the country during a more elaborate presentation. This tool should encourage students to adopt a sustainable construction approach in their assignments, and their real-life projects later, based on a simplified methodology.
